Supporters of Leeds United have recently reacted to a transfer link which has emerged between the Whites and Mainz 05 striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
While Leeds’ interest in Mateta is claimed to be ‘concrete’, it is stated there is ‘strong interest’ from other Premier League clubs.
However, the report by Football Insider does admit that signing a striker is more likely in the summer than in the current transfer window for the Yorkshire outfit.
The 23-year-old forward has until the summer of 2023 on his existing deal with his Bundesliga club and a market value of £13.5m according to Transfermarkt.
This report was relayed on Twitter by James Marshment and it had lots of Leeds supporters talking.
So, what did these Leeds fans have to say bout the transfer link with Jean-Philippe Mateta?
“Don’t need a striker”
“Pointless buying him now and in the summer we need Haaland.”
In Bielsa’s current first-team squad, he has three out-and-out strikers with a squad number, those being Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo and Joe Gelhardt (per Transfermarkt).
Would you be happy if Leeds signed Jean-Philippe Mateta?
No, he's not good enough
Yes, he's a good player
“If Spain’s no.9 can’t dislodge Bamford then I’m 200% sure we’re not looking for a centre forward”
“What’s the point we have Rodrigo a Spanish no 9 and he can not get a game at 9”
Of the Whites’ three natural strikers, Bamford has been in the best form this season as he has bagged 10 goals and three assists in 17 league outings.
Rodrigo, meanwhile, has made 15 appearances in the Premier League, in which he has managed to score three goals but not provide an assist for Leeds.
Gelhardt, however, has not made a single senior appearance for Bielsa’s side so far this term.
“And so it begins…..”
“Poor men’s jay roy grot”
While the majority of fans were negative about the transfer link with the French striker, some Leeds fans were a little more positive following the report.
“If he can handle murderball and get “Bielsa ready” ASAP good enough for me”
“Finally some attention possibly at improving our conversion rate of chances created.”
As can be seen in most of the responses from Leeds fans, though, many of them were not keen on the idea of the Whites signing Mateta from Mainz.
