Many Celtic fans have been discussing some comments from Neil Lennon that recently emerged on social media.

Lennon was talking to the press following Celtic’s 3-0 win over Dundee United in the Premiership. Goals from Odsonne Edouard, Ismaila Soro and David Turnbull had helped the Hoops to a win on Wednesday.

After the game, Lennon was talking about Vasilis Barkas, who had started against Dundee United. Lennon said that while Barkas hasn’t shown what he’s all about, but he’s capable of doing that. He also made it clear that he wants the goalkeeper to play in the upcoming Old Firm derby too.

Would it be right for Lennon to start Barkas?

I’m guessing that Lenny has been told no more money will be spent on a goalkeeper, so he’s basically throwing Barkas into the sink or swim scenario. Hopefully he starts to show some of his AEK form, but definitely needs the guys in front to defend better.

Barkas had joined Celtic from AEK Athens in the summer transfer window for a fee of £2.95 million plus add-ons. While he had started the season as a regular starter for the Bhoys, he was later dropped. Scott Bain and Conor Hazard came into the first-team. Against Dundee United though, Barkas had started for Lennon’s men.

In the current campaign, Barkas has been the second-highest rated goalkeeper in the Premiership season. Conor Hazard has been the highest-rated goalkeeper with a rating of 6.83. Barkas has picked up a rating of 6.62 (as per Whoscored).

This suggests that Barkas hasn’t had a great campaign and Hazard has performed better. So because of that, it comes as a bit of a surprise that Lennon will opt for Barkas, though perhaps his clean sheet against Dundee United has something to do with his decision.
