A lot of Tottenham Hotspur fans have been slating Matt Doherty on Twitter after he started the Lilywhites’ latest EFL Cup clash versus Stoke City on Wednesday evening.
The Republic of Ireland international did manage to set Harry Kane up for a goalscoring chance in the first half of this game, with the England captain hammering his attempt at goal into the side netting.
However, Doherty also played a notable role in Stoke City’s 53rd-minute equaliser, as Jacob Brown’s cross to set up Jordan Thompson’s goal fell between the 28-year-old and Spurs ‘keeper Hugo Lloris.
Perhaps the £18m-rated man’s failure to deal with that cross struck a nerve with some fans of the north London club and that may provide us with one reason why many Lilywhites fans have been slating the right-back’s performance in this evening’s fixture.
So, what did these Tottenham Hotspur fans have to say about Doherty’s performance versus Stoke?
“Doherty is rubbish”
“Doherty is so bad man”
“That is abysmal defending from Doherty. Good grief.”
“Doherty waste of money”
“Doherty is awful. Aurier has a mistake in him but is different level. That says something”
“Doherty can stay in Stoke as their backup RB”
Was Doherty Spurs' worst player versus Stoke?
YES
NO
“Matt Doherty is a massive fraud… what on earth was his positioning all about for that goal?! #stotot #coys”
“Doherty. Shocking.”
All in all, it seems as though a lot of Lilywhites supporters’ patience is already wearing thin with the £15.12m summer signing.
