Scott McDermott and Jonny McFarlane discussed all of the latest Rangers news on the latest edition of the Record Rangers podcast and the journalists spent some time talking about potential future player sales during the show.

Profiting from player sales is reported to be a ‘widely untapped’ market for Rangers at present and the Glasgow club trail their Old Firm rivals significantly in this area, with football finance expert Kieran Maguire explaining that Rangers have made just £6m from player sale profits since 2014, while their Glasgow rivals have made a whopping £97m from player sale profits in that same time.

As per Maguire, Rangers’ rivals have offset their day to day losses for the latest financial year via their player sale profits so it may be understandable why journalist McDermott declared that the Gers “will have to make a big sale next summer” to boost their finances and he went on to suggest that Alfredo Morelos is the player that Rangers are most likely to cash in on.

How well do you remember Rangers' 2020/21 season so far? We'll start you off with an easy one... Rangers beat Aberdeen 1-0 in the opening gameweek of the Premiership, but which player scored the only goal of the game?

McDermott said: “Irrespective of what happens this season in terms of how much success they have, they will have to move somebody on and bring some money in, and that has to be the way forward for Rangers, for Celtic – for any Scottish club to remain sustainable.

“In terms of who that is, Morelos would obviously be the favourite for that, just in terms of his age, where he is in his career, given that bids have already come in for him.”

Do you think Rangers will sell Morelos next summer?

TIF Thoughts on what McDermott had to say about Rangers potentially cashing in on Morelos…

Morelos did attract interest in the summer transfer window, with Ligue 1 side Lille reportedly tabling as much as £16.25m for the Colombian forward, though the Gers rejected that bid, which is said to have been the fourth approach for Morelos from Lille that the Glasgow club turned down this past summer.

However, it had been claimed that Morelos wanted to leave Ibrox and join Lille when they were pursuing the 24-year-old in the summer and as well as that, the £13.5m-rated centre-forward is the Gers’ most valuable player, according to Transfermarkt, with their next-most valuable player, James Tavernier, valued at £9m less than Morelos.

So, if Morelos still has his heart set on a departure from Rangers next summer, perhaps cashing in on him then could be the best move for all parties, as the Colombian would get his transfer and perhaps the Gers would receive a bigger boost to their finances than they would if they sold any other player.

As a result, we feel it’s understandable why McDermott thinks that Morelos is the most likely player for Rangers to cash in on.
