Host Ricki Neill and ex-Rangers players Derek Ferguson and Ian Durrant discussed all of the latest Rangers news during the most recent edition of the Blues Brothers Podcast, where they spent some time looking ahead to the January transfer window.

In Steven Gerrard’s first season as Rangers manager in 2018/19, the club spent £10.69m and received £3.32m in transfer fees, while in the 2019/20 campaign, they spent £10.7m and received £610k in the transfer market. This season, Rangers have spent a total of £10.35m on seven permanent additions to their squad while they also signed central midfielder Bongani Zungu on loan from Amiens, recouping £698k from player sales.

How well do you remember Rangers' 2020/21 season so far? We'll start you off with an easy one... Rangers beat Aberdeen 1-0 in the opening gameweek of the Premiership, but which player scored the only goal of the game?

With that in mind, it may be fair to say that Rangers’ spending this season has been fairly consistent with what they’ve spent in the transfer market in both of Gerrard’s two full seasons at the club and it mightn’t be a surprise if they don’t dip back into the transfer market in January.

However, Ferguson indicated that he thinks there is a chance that the Gers will do some January transfer business during this recent edition of the Blues Brothers Podcast, saying:

“He’ll be happy with what he’s got just now, but he’ll be looking. If somebody comes up and he thinks they’re available and they can fit into the team I’m sure he’ll go for them.

“You can always do with additions, that’s the way it is now because they’re going to be playing a lot of games – a hell of a lot of games – so, you will need cover.”

TIF Thoughts on what Ferguson had to say about the possibility of Rangers doing some January transfer business…

As it is his job to ensure Rangers get results on the pitch, perhaps it is inevitable that Gerrard will want to strengthen his squad even more in January, as Ferguson suggested, even though Rangers are unbeaten in each of their 20 games in all competitions this season, winning 17 of them.

Given their stellar start to the season, knowing that they haven’t spent much more money than the amount they’ve already spent this term in either of their two full seasons with Gerrard as manager and knowing that the current viral outbreak has harmed football clubs’ finances, perhaps it is unlikely that we’re going to see the Glasgow club do much more transfer business this season.

However, the Gers have done some January transfer business in both of Gerrard’s two seasons at the club before the current one so perhaps Ferguson is right not to rule it out.
