Jonny McFarlane, Scott McDermott and Fraser Wilson discussed all of the latest Rangers news on the most recent edition of the Record Rangers podcast and they spent some time talking about George Edmundson’s future at Ibrox while discussing his and Jordan Jones’ recent breach of regulations relating to the current viral outbreak.

Both players have been suspended by the Glasgow club, charged by the Scottish FA and are now self-isolating due to their breach of these regulations and on top of that, Gers boss Steven Gerrard wasn’t incredibly positive about the players’ respective futures at Ibrox during a recent interview with RangersTV discussing the recent incident involving the pair as he said they will “regret” what they did “for some time.”

How well do you remember Rangers' 2020/21 season so far? We'll start you off with an easy one... Rangers beat Aberdeen 1-0 in the opening gameweek of the Premiership, but which player scored the only goal of the game?

However, despite his recent actions and Gerrard’s comments on them, Wilson was positive about Edmundson’s future at the Glasgow club during his recent appearance on the Record Rangers podcast, saying:

“Rangers put a lot of work into signing George Edmundson last summer, didn’t they? They faced a fair bit of a fight to get him and I do really like him. I think he’s raw, but I think he’s got the natural attributes of a really good defender. I think he reads the game really well.

“I’d like to think, maybe a year down the line, he’ll have earned his place to get back – the start of next season, maybe he’ll have earned his right to get back into that squad because I think there’s a big player for future years there with George Edmundson.”

McDermott then shared his thoughts on Edmundson’s future and he was in agreement with Wilson, saying:

“I tend to agree with Fraser. I think he’s an asset to Rangers because of his age, because of his development, I think there is a resale value if George Edmundson gets playing again, gets playing for Rangers on a regular basis.

“So, it’ll be interesting to see how the club deal with Edmundson, in particular. If he shows enough contrition – Steven Gerrard said yesterday they’re very remorseful and apologetic – there might still be a chance for him.”

TIF Thoughts on what Wilson and McDermott had to say about Edmundson’s future…

It’s clear that the two journalists feel Edmundson is worth too much to Rangers for this incident to spell the end of his time at the club, however, it may be fair to say that the 23-year-old hasn’t been a very prominent figure in Gerrard’s side since he was signed from Oldham Athletic in the summer of 2019 for £706k

Last season, the £495k-rated centre-back made just 16 appearances for the Glasgow club in all competitions and he has played in just two of Rangers’ 18 games in all competitions this season, prior to their UEFA Europa League clash with Benfica on Thursday, which Edmundson will not be involved in either.

He earned a poor overall WhoScored rating of 5.52 from his only Premiership appearance this term, which, perhaps, suggests that he didn’t do much with that time on the pitch to say that he should feature more regularly in the league and this off-the-pitch incident will surely do him no favours either.

So, while these journalists think that he may still have a future at Ibrox, you could argue that he has, thus far, failed to really establish himself at the club and given that he will have less than two years remaining on his contract next summer, it may be fair to say that time is ticking for him to prove his worth for the Gers.
