Former Celtic player Simon Donnelly has recently heaped praise on the club’s young Dutchman Jeremie Frimpong.

Donnelly was a guest on the latest episode of the ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. One player that they talked about was Frimpong and Donnelly had high praise for the youngster. He believes that Frimpong has set the standards really high for himself.

Frimpong had joined Celtic from Manchester City in the summer of 2019 for a fee of only £342k. Since joining the club, he has made 37 appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys, directly contributing to nine goals so far (as per Transfermarkt).

Donnelly described Frimpong to be a ‘fantastic’ player for the Bhoys and he said: “Yeah well, I think I covered a lot of the games for Celtic TV last year and he was one that came into the team – huge excitement, taking players on, taking players out. I liked the way he lifted his head, picking players out. And he set the standards really high for himself, and I think again sometimes, you get to your second season and people know what you’re about a wee bit, and he’s got to adapt to it.

“There’s maybe been a wee bit of criticism on the back of how good he came into the team, but the kid’s starting his career. He’s an exciting player, for me, I know people always refer back to defensive duties, but I think it is more about his size than anything else. I don’t really remember him being found wanting a great amount of times for Celtic. He’s certainly a player that I like. Nine times out of ten, Celtic are going to be going forward and he’s fantastic at that.”

TIF Thoughts on Donnelly’s comments regarding Frimpong…

Frimpong is still 19, but he’s already a regular for Celtic and has played every single league game for the Bhoys this season. He has also contributed to two goals in the league (as per Transfermarkt).

The Dutchman hasn’t just played at right-back, but he’s also played on the right side of the midfield. It shows that he adds versatility to the team too. He has been the club’s fifth-best rated player in the Europa League campaign and it shows how good he is and because of that, he does deserve praise from Donnelly.
