Celtic pundit Paul John Dykes has recently talked about the comments that Scott Brown made following the club’s 4-1 loss to Sparta Prague in the UEFA Europa League.
Dykes was hosting the latest episode of the ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. One topic of discussion was the club’s loss to Sparta Prague.
Following the game, the club’s veteran midfielder Brown had said that the team isn’t hitting high standards because of ‘whatever reason’ and he feels that the showing against Sparta Prague wasn’t a team performance and it was only about a ‘group of individuals’ (as per the Scottish Sun).
Do you think there are issues in the Celtic dressing room?
Yes
No
Dykes believes that these comments from Brown are a sign of the fact that something is wrong behind the scenes at Parkhead.
He said: “Scott Brown said we’ve not hit those standards yet ‘for whatever reason’. Now, he’s the captain of the club. Obviously, when he’s putting his point across, you listen. I mean, he’s the leader on the pitch. That seems to me – maybe I’m really analysing what’s been getting said last night – ‘for whatever reason’, this is one of the issues. They don’t know what the reasons are, therefore they can’t sort it.
“He went onto say – it wasn’t a team performance tonight. It was a group of individuals. Again, that reeks of issues behind the scenes. If people are playing as individuals, it goes back to some of the language used by Neil Lennon against Ferencvaros – talking about people looking for moves. This concerns me.”
TIF Thoughts on Dykes’ claim regarding Brown’s comments…
Following Celtic’s loss to Ferencvaros in the qualifying stages of the Champions League, Neil Lennon had urged the team’s players to sort out their mentality and attitude. He felt that the side had ‘themselves to blame’ for the defeat too (as per BBC Sport).
Even Callum McGregor has said that the team’s performance against Sparta Prague was ‘disjointed’ and it was an ’embarrassing’ showing from the Bhoys (as per the Daily Record).
These comments from Lennon and McGregor also seem to be pointing towards the fact that something indeed is wrong at Celtic. Because of that, it is understandable why Dykes feels the same about Brown’s comments.
