Celtic journalist Michael Gannon has recently made a claim about the club’s star Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Gannon made an appearance on the latest episode of the Record Celtic podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. One topic of discussion was Elyounoussi and Gannon believes that the winger could become Celtic’s best player if he ends up being consistent.

Elyounoussi recently scored a hat-trick for Celtic in their 4-1 win over Motherwell, while he grabbed a brace n Celtic’s 2-2 draw against Lille in the UEFA Europa League. The Norway international had re-joined Celtic on loan in the summer.

Do you think Elyounoussi can become Celtic's best player?

Gannon believes that Elyounoussi hasn’t performed consistently for Celtic thus far – though if he does start to do so, he may not remain at Parkhead beyond his loan spell.

He said: “I think Neil Lennon’s touched on it as well, he’s got to do it week in, week out. I think he has got the tools to be Celtic’s best player, but he’s not doing it on a consistent basis. You’ve got to do it week in, week out – but you could argue that if he does it week in, week out at that level, he may not be at Celtic.”

TIF Thoughts on Gannon’s comments regarding Elyounoussi…

Elyounoussi, currently 26, has made 11 appearances in the Premiership this season and has directly contributed to seven goals. In the Europa League, he has scored three times in as many games for the Bhoys (as per Transfermarkt).

It shows that he does possess quite a bit of ability, but his first league goal this season did not come until in his seventh Premiership appearance of the campaign against Hibernian. In the Premiership, as many as 11 players have a higher average match rating than him (as per WhoScored).

That might be a reflection of his so-called inconsistency despite showing his quality in front of goal on occasion. Therefore, it is understandable why Gannon wants the Norwegian to perform at a high level on a regular basis for Celtic.
