The Athletic’s Wolverhampton Wanderers correspondent Tim Spiers has recently shed light on the situation surrounding Adama Traore’s contract.

According to a recent report by The Athletic, the Old Gold and the player have reached a ‘deadlock’ regarding an extension to his current contract.

It is claimed that while he looked set to sign a new deal with the Molineux club last month, Traore does now not believe the offer to be ‘reflective of his value‘.

The 24-year-old Spaniard’s current deal with Wolves runs until the summer of 2023 and he has a market value of £36m according to Transfermarkt.

During the latest episode of The Athletic’s The Molineux View podcast, Spiers discussed the situation with Traore and shed some light on it.

To kick off this quiz on Romain Saiss, what squad number does the defensive midfielder currently wear for the Old Gold?

He said: “[It’s] unusual for Wolves, normally contracts just come out of nowhere and they’re signed and it’s happy days, it’s five years – as we’ve seen a lot in the last few weeks.

“But with Traore, it’s a bit different. So, talks were progressing well about a month ago – but since then, they’ve broken down; primarily a financial issue, from what we gather.

“Traore’s people believe the offer on the table doesn’t represent his importance to the squad, but this breaking-down of talks is coinciding with him not being in the starting XI.

“He’s been on the bench for the last five games. From what we understand, Traore believes he’s being punished for not signing this deal and is ‘p***** off’ and doesn’t plan to sign one anytime soon.

“[He’s] not happy with the current situation, not happy with the money on offer and not happy with not being [in] the team.”

TIF Thoughts on what Tim Spiers said about Adama Traore’s contract…

As can be seen in what the journalist had to say, there certainly seems to be some issues going on behind the scenes at Molineux regarding the player’s contract.

Should Wolves offer Adama Traore a contract worth whatever he wants?

No, that's not sensible

Yes, he needs to stay

Hopefully, for the Old Gold, the situation can quickly be resolved as the 24-year-old winger can be a key player for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side when he is firing on all cylinders.

Last season, he was Wolves’ best-rated player in the Premier League as he earned a 7.49/10 average rating over 37 appearances in the league (per WhoScored).

Not only were his performances strong but he also provided the most league assists of any Wolves player (nine), completed by far the most dribbles per game (5.0) and also the joint-second-most key passes (1.3).

So, Traore’s usefulness when he is playing at his best for his Molineux club is abundantly clear.
