The Athletic’s West Ham United correspondent Roshane Thomas has recently provided an update on Michail Antonio’s contract.

So far this season, the 30-year-old English attacker has been in impressive form for the Hammers as he has netted three goals in six Premier League appearances (per WhoScored).

Antonio’s performances in the six matches have earned him a stellar 7.25/10 average rating, making him West Ham’s best-performing player.

However, the player’s contract at the London Stadium is set to expire at the end of the current campaign (per Transfermarkt).

In the latest episode of The Athletic’s U Irons podcast, Thomas discussed the current situation regarding the Englishman’s contract and provided an update.

Who did West Ham United face in their opening fixture of the 2020/21 Premier League season?

He said: “He’s an important player for West Ham and the situation right now [is] his contract expires at the end of this season. In July, The Athletic revealed that West Ham have the option to extend Antonio’s contract by a further year.

“But it’s believed the preference now is to discuss a long-term deal. Antonio wants a four-year contract and talks are likely to take place in December/January.

“Antonio actually wanted to negotiate a new contract earlier this year, but talks were postponed due to West Ham’s financial position changing with the pandemic.

“Antonio’s really happy at West Ham; he can see himself retiring at the club. Those close to him say it’s the happiest he’s been for quite some time.

“He’s enjoying playing under [David] Moyes [and] earns in the region of £70,000 a week.”

Due to the impressive form he has been in for the Hammers this term – and also last term when he finished the league season as the Irons’ best-rated player – that is seemingly a sensible decision by the club.
