Speaking recently on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano discussed Sergio Reguilon’s future at Tottenham Hotspur.

Since moving to Spurs from Real Madrid in what was a £27 million deal back in September, Reguilon has gone on to feature nine times for the club, over which he has provided three assists, prior to the club’s fixture against Ludogorets Razgrad on Thursday evening.

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? 1. Who is Spurs' top scorer in all competitions so far this season?

Of these nine appearances, five have come in the Premier League, in which the £25.2 million-rated left-back has provided two assists and averaged a highly impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.13 – ranking him as the club’s fourth-best performer in the top flight.

The Spain international was one topic of conversation on a recent episode of the Here We Go podcast, in which Romano discussed the 23-year-old’s relationship with Jose Mourinho after the two featured in an Instagram post on the Tottenham manager’s account, as well as touching on the buy-back clause Madrid have in place for the defender.

He said: “It’s not a normal picture, in my opinion. It shows how happy Jose [is and] also how happy Reguilon is with Tottenham and this is important when you have a player with this kind of clause.

“Real Madrid can bring the player back in two years for €45 million, so many Tottenham fans said this summer, ‘Why [have] we [signed] a player [who] is [going] back [to] Real Madrid in one or two years?’

“I always said, ‘Yes, it’s a possibility because he’s Spanish and Real Madrid have the clause to bring him back. But the key will be how [happy] the player will be with Tottenham, because the final decision about his future will always [depend] on him.

“The player is so, so happy at Tottenham. He’s a starter, he’s playing in an incredible way, he’s great on the pitch, he’s great [off] the pitch, he’s always smiling, the club are so happy with his attitude. So, he’s part of the team right now, and he’s part of the Spurs feeling, and that’s why he’s not planning [on saying], ‘OK, I’m happy but next summer [I’m going] back to Real Madrid,’ he’s not got this plan.

“Obviously, he’s Spanish, Real Madrid is his team because [he was] born in Madrid, so it’s normal and it’s possible that in the future [he could go] back. But, today, he is happy with the project [at Spurs].”

Do you think Sergio Reguilon will stay at Tottenham even if Madrid make a bid?

TIF Thoughts on Fabrizio Romano’s comments regarding Sergio Reguilon…

From Romano’s comments, it is clear that the journalist is of the opinion that Reguilon is delighted with how things are going for him at Tottenham so far, and, despite the fact that Madrid do have a buy-back clause for the 23-year-old, whether or not he decides to move back to Spain is completely up to him.

And, while we can’t comment on whether or not we believe Reguilon will eventually move back to Madrid, one way to keep a player happy at a club is by winning trophies. And, with Tottenham currently sitting top of the Premier League table, if Mourinho’s side can maintain their position until the end of the season, in our opinion, winning the title would certainly not damage the chances of Reguilon wanting to remain in north London.
