Who will the Toon play in the next round of the Carabao Cup after they beat Newport County on penalties?

One of the topics that came up during the show was the proposed takeover of the Toon by PCP Capital Partners, PIF, and the Reuben brothers that was withdrawn in July.

During this conversation, Edwards stated that the Reuben brothers could just end this saga by replacing PIF rather than taking 10% like they intend to do.

He said: “The Reubens can buy the club outright if they wanted to, that’s another thing we need to say. They could rescue this deal and just say ‘right, we’ll replace the Saudis.’

“They’re worth £18bn.”

Do you think the Reuben brothers should step in?

Yes, they should just buy us

TIF Thoughts on the Reuben brothers and Edwards’ view on them…

After the deal was initially withdrawn in July, the Reuben brothers issued a press release that claimed they were still backing the deal in its current form and would still participate in the takeover if an agreement with the Premier League could be reached.

The consortium did try to get the takeover through again behind closed doors, but the Premier League refused to pass the deal, and now a legal challenge has been launched to try and force the takeover through.

However, considering that the deal’s problems have all been with PIF either from piracy or working out if the Saudi state and PIF are separate, you could argue that if they weren’t part of the deal, this could have gone through.

Edwards makes a valid point on the Reuben brothers as they are worth £18b, so they would have enough to buy the Toon and still be the second richest owners in the Premier League.

However, they seem committed to the deal in its current form, so unless something changes there, perhaps it is unlikely the Reuben brothers will take on a more prominent role in this takeover.
