Newcastle United journalist Chris Waugh has been talking about how and why Toon striker Callum Wilson has been ‘angry’ in recent weeks.

This comes after Waugh recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Newcastle-themed podcast Pod On The Tyne where he spoke about a number of topics concerning Steve Bruce’s side.

Who will the Toon play in the next round of the Carabao Cup after they beat Newport County on penalties?

On the topic of Wilson, who scored both of Newcastle’s goals in their recent 2-1 win over Everton before being substituted towards the end of the match, Waugh had this to say on the striker as the panel heaped praise on the striker.

He said: “It’s the anger he had when he came off, being taken off early because he wanted the hat-trick, and he had it on the opening day – he scores one against West Ham and he comes off and says, ‘I should have scored three, I’m annoyed at myself, I’m frustrated,’ he comes off against Burnley and says ‘yeah, I should have scored a hat-trick’. Then he’s got this one and again, he’s angry because he hasn’t been given that chance to score, he’s just desperate to score more goals and that is clearly just innate within him and that’s what I think is the difference.”

Newcastle signed the Englishman back in the previous summer transfer window from AFC Bournemouth for a fee of £20.03 million.

Since then, the 28-year-old has scored six goals in the seven Premier League appearances he’s made for Newcastle so far this season (per Transfermarkt).

Wilson’s performances have earned him a decent season rating of 7.07/10, making him Newcastle’s fourth-highest-rated player so far in this campaign (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts on Chris Waugh’s comments on Wilson…

Taking the Everton game as an example, with Wilson coming off before the end of the match when he only needed one more goal for a hat-trick, it’s understandable why the striker might be a bit peeved at being substituted before the full-time whistle.

This just shows that the Englishman is desperate to score as many goals as he can for Newcastle as Waugh mentioned in the podcast, which is what any Toon fan would want from their striker.
