Liverpool journalist Mark Wakefield has been sharing his thoughts on whether or not he would offer Reds winger Mohamed Salah a new contract when his current deal at Anfield expires in 2023

This comes after Wakefield recently made an appearance on the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast where he spoke about a number of different topics concerning Jurgen Klopp’s side.

First up in this Steven Gerrard quiz, how old is the former Liverpool man?

On the subject of current Liverpool players who have their contracts expiring in 2023 and whether or not he would offer them a new deal, Wakefield has this to say on Salah in particular.

He said: “I mean, it’s a tricky one, because certainly in my lifetime, he is one of the best players I’ve ever seen in a Liverpool shirt. I think he’s come up with the most magical moments you could ever wish to see on a football pitch, certainly at Anfield.

“Now, unlike [Sadio] Mane, I think Salah is a bit reliant on his pace, running between the lines, obviously on counter-attacks, he’s obviously one of the most devastating players in world football in those situations, and as much as we don’t want it to happen, there is going to come a time when he just loses half a yard, a yard in pace, and that will affect his game, whether we want it to or not.

“For me personally, I wouldn’t offer him a new deal.”

Liverpool signed the Egyptian back in the 2017 summer transfer window from AS Roma for a fee of £37.8 million, after the winger previously had spells with FC Basel, Fiorentina and Premier League side, Chelsea, earlier in his career.

Since arriving at Anfield, Salah has been a revelation for the Reds, managing to score 104 goals and provide 42 assists in just 166 appearances across all competitions (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Mark Wakefield’s comments on potentially offering Salah a new deal…

Given Salah’s impressive goalscoring record since he became a Liverpool player, it comes as a surprise in our view that Wakefield wouldn’t offer the £108m-rated man a new deal at the club when his current one expires.

Even looking at Salah’s record so far this season, he has shown nothing to suggest that his quality is degrading or his prowess in front of goal is diminishing, with eight goals so far in this Premier League campaign and a season rating of 7.65/10 (per WhoScored).

Whether or not Liverpool do decide to offer Salah a new contract at the club in the future, in our view, the winger will be remembered for his impeccable goalscoring record and go down as one of the great Liverpool players because of how many trophies he has helped guide the club to so far.
