First up in this Steven Gerrard quiz, how old is the former Liverpool man?

One player that he mentioned and picked out as his hero of the week was Diogo Jota after he scored a hat-trick against Atalanta for Liverpool in their 5-0 win over the Serie A side in the UEFA Champions League.

These three goals took the 23-year-old to seven in his first 10 appearances for Liverpool, which led to McFarlane gushing over the Portuguese winger.

It seems as if McFarlane was not convinced that Jota would be good enough for the Reds, but now admits that the 23-year-old has proved him wrong.

He said: “I have to face up and be 100% honest.

“I was a bit perplexed when Liverpool splashed out £40/41m [on] this guy from Wolves, who was one of these one goal in five-type players and yes, he was a tidy player; yes, he’s good on the ball, he’s clearly a quality player, but Liverpool standard? Not for me, I didn’t think so at all; I couldn’t see it.

“This goes to show that Jurgen Klopp knows a little more about football than I do because I thought last night [Tuesday] was absolutely tremendous.

“So well done to Diogo Jota for proving me wrong.”

TIF Thoughts on Jota and McFarlane’s view on him…

If you look at Jota’s Premier League record for Wolverhampton Wanderers, he made 67 appearances, scored 16 goals and provided six assists.

Now, this is a decent record, but you can see why McFarlane maybe thought he wasn’t good enough for Liverpool, considering both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah exceeded Jota’s Premier League goal total during last season alone.

However, since he has made the move to Anfield, Jota has scored three Premier League goals and four in the Champions League, and looks to have been a great signing by Jurgen Klopp’s men.

It is good to see that McFarlane can admit his mistake and give Jota the praise he deserves.
