Phil Hay has been speaking on the latest edition of The Athletic’s The Phil Hay Show about all things relating to Leeds United.

Who did Leeds sign from a La Liga side in September?

One topic that Hay spent a little bit of time on was Leif Davis.

The 20-year-old only signed a new deal at the club nearly a year ago that will keep him at Elland Road until the summer of 2023 and he has made 12 first-team appearances for the club, including his Premier League debut against Manchester City.

For his one appearance against City, the defender earned a pretty poor 5.86 rating, but he was only on the pitch for 13 minutes, so this feels like a harsh rating.

Hay spent a bit of time on the 20-year-old, and he revealed that many people at Leeds rate him highly and that one of the reasons Barry Douglas left Leeds was because of Davis.

He said: “He’s very well thought of, is Davis, and he has been since he came, and of the Under-23s, he’s really been as involved as most under Bielsa and has quite often been the go-to player when Bielsa’s needed a left-back.

“You saw that with Barry Douglas going to Blackburn – part of the reason for that move was because Davis was ahead of him and was third-choice, or at least in the mix of three with [Stuart] Dallas and [Ezgjan] Alioski on the left-hand side.

“The bottom line is that at Leeds, they think an awful lot of Davis, and they think that he’s a bit of a steal for what they paid to sign him from Morecambe.”

Do you think Davis should play more first-team games?

TIF Thoughts on Davis and Hay’s information on him…

The Whites signed Davis in the summer of 2018 for an undisclosed fee from Morecambe and they apparently rate him highly.

The number of first-team appearances he has made already could be a sign that they do rate him and Marcelo Bielsa is also a fan.

This season he has made two appearances for the first team, one in the Carabao Cup and then, as mentioned earlier, that Premier League debut against City.

So, it is good to see that he is getting some minutes for the first team, and we will be watching with interest to see how many more first-team matches Davis plays for the Whites this season.
