Aston Villa podcaster Neil Dunworth has been sharing his praise for Villa captain Jack Grealish and his performance during the Birmingham club’s 4-3 defeat to Southampton at the weekend.
This comes after Dunworth recently hosted the latest episode of Villa-themed podcast For The Love of Paul McGrath where he reflected on the defeat at Villa Park.
During the episode, Dunworth had this to say on Grealish and his display against the Saints.
He said: “The second-half fightback was very much orchestrated by our captain. Jack Grealish clips in that ball, it was a wonderful cross for Tyrone Mings’ header, Southampton definitely weren’t expecting it. I think Mings just jumped and glanced it, it definitely wasn’t a training ground move or anything like that, so that was a fantastic cross.
“He did really well to get on to the ball for the penalty and if, as I say, that he played the captain’s role and gave the ball to Ollie Watkins to score the penalty, that for me is massive kudos for him if that’s what his thinking was – and then that finish, it’s a worldie, it’s an unbelievable finish, there are very few players [who] can do that.”
As Dunworth mentioned in the podcast, Grealish assisted Villa’s first goal in the game that Tyrone Mings scored and then he managed to score Villa’s third goal of the game in injury time.
Grealish’s performance against Southampton earned him a stunning match rating of 9.07/10, making him Villa’s highest-rated player on the day (per WhoScored).
Throughout their 2020/21 Premier League campaign so far, Grealish has been Villa’s standout performer, with WhoScored giving him a season rating of 8.22/10 for his performances in the six league games he’s played in.

It’s great to hear this praise that Dunworth has for Grealish and his performance against Southampton. It’s a shame that Villa didn’t manage to get a positive result at the weekend but lots of Villa fans will undoubtedly be over the moon with Grealish’s contributions in it and how impressive he has been for the club so far this season.
