Aston Villa podcaster Neil Dunworth has been sharing his thoughts on Brighton & Hove Albion full-back Tariq Lamptey.
This comes after Dunworth recently made an appearance on The Villa View Podcast where he reflected on the Birmingham club’s recent 2-1 defeat to Graham Potter’s side.
On the topic of Lamptey, who was sent off for Brighton during the clash at Villa Park, Dunworth had this to say on the defender. (14.31)
He said: “I don’t like him. I’m going [to be honest] I don’t like him. I don’t think he’s going to grow into the game, and I think he’s a flash-in-the-pan, a Shaun Wright-Phillips type [of player].”
Brighton signed the 20-year-old, who is currently valued at £16.2 million, from the Chelsea U-23 side for a fee of £2.97 million back in the previous January transfer window.
Since then, the Englishman has made 17 appearances for Brighton in which he has managed to score one goal and provide four assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).
In the match against Villa, Lamptey picked up two yellow cards that saw him leave the pitch before the final whistle.

TIF Thoughts on Neil Dunworth’s comments on Lamptey…
Given how Lamptey’s performance against Villa earned him a disappointing match rating of 5.27/10, making him the lowest-rated Brighton player on the pitch, this could be considered as an example of Lamptey being a “flash-in-the-pan” player.
However, seeing as this was just one game and Lamptey is still relatively young, it would be unfair to completely write him off for the future as Dunworth has, in our view.
Also, with Dunworth comparing Lamptey to Shaun Wright-Phillips, who made a total of 315 Premier League appearances throughout his career in which he managed to score 33 goals and provide 32 assists and win a handful of trophies with Chelsea and Manchester City, he may not be the best example to be compared to in a negative light.
