Dom Howson and James Marriott discussed all of the latest Sheffield Wednesday news on the most recent edition of the Singing The Blues podcast, where they spent some time talking about last Thursday’s press conference with Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri.

One of the talking points that the pair discussed during the show was Chansiri’s comments on the 2018 rumours that Red Bull was interested in investing in the Yorkshire club.

To kick off our latest quiz on this past weekend's EFL action, which team earned a 3-0 victory over Championship leaders Reading at the weekend?

As per the Sheffield Star, Chansiri had this to say about those rumours last Thursday: “Some try to say Red Bull want to buy it. I told them many times, how you think of your club [as a] very big club. You think too much. Red Bull are not going to think about the Championship, anyway. If they buy, they buy Premier League. Sometimes you think too big about yourselves. Actually, Sheffield Wednesday is not that big.”

After acknowledging that some Owls fans wouldn’t like the owner’s comments during this recent edition of Singing The Blues, Howson then went on to defend what Chansiri had to say, stating:

“I think there will just be people out there who won’t like his answers, won’t like some of what he had to say, especially over Sheffield Wednesday. He’s saying that, well, actually, Red Bull, if they were going to invest in a football club, they’re going to do that with a team in the Premier League rather than the Championship right now.

“I think you’ve got to put those comments into context and it’s a huge talking point. Is he wrong? Sheffield Wednesday fans – there’s still a lot out there who hark back to the days of the early ’90s and when they were in the Premier League – the trouble is that Wednesday have been out of the Premier League for 20 years now and they’ve got no divine right.”

Do you think there is a chance Red Bull would invest in Sheffield Wednesday?

TIF Thoughts on what Howson had to say about Chansiri’s comments…

Red Bull has taken over football clubs outside of the top flight in the past. Their German club, RB Leipzig, for example, arose after Red Bull ‘purchased the playing licence of fifth-tier SSV Markranstadt’ and they then built that club up into a UEFA Champions League side

Given that Red Bull has previously invested outside of the top tier, it is perhaps possible that they would look to do so again if they were to invest in an English club to build that team up as they did with Leipzig.

So, Red Bull investing in second-tier Sheffield Wednesday would then not appear to be such a crazy idea and it’s perhaps understandable why Owls fans would take exception to Chansiri’s comments, as he may be wrong.
