James Marriott and Dom Howson discussed all of the latest Sheffield Wednesday news on the most recent edition of the Singing The Blues podcast and they spent some time reacting to the Owls’ sacking of Garry Monk earlier this week and discussing potential replacements for the 41-year-old during the show.

Paul Cook has been linked with the job and ex-Owls manager Danny Wilson has given the ex-Wigan Athletic manager his backing to take charge at Hillsborough, declaring that he “was absolutely brilliant” as Wigan boss.

To kick off our latest quiz on this past weekend's EFL action, which team earned a 3-0 victory over Championship leaders Reading at the weekend?

Wilson isn’t the only one who would seemingly like to see the 53-year-old take charge of the Yorkshire club, as Marriott also called for Cook to be considered for the position during this podcast, saying:

“There’s a manager out there who has a pretty decent record in terms of being at clubs with very little resource but also someone that tends to kind of say it like it is – obviously, I’m talking about Paul Cook here, who’s been out of work since having a bit of a torrid time last season at Wigan.

“Now by rights, if not for what’s happening off the field, they would’ve stayed up comfortably last season, having been in the bottom three for a large part of the beginning of last season – they had a really bad start, didn’t they? And then he really got them out of it.

“There’ll be a lot of fans that are saying, why are we not talking to him? Why is he seemingly not in the picture as someone that seems to be quite a popular choice among the fans?

“He would probably be quite high up on my list in terms of the fact that I don’t just see him as someone that comes in and does the job for this season, he could actually start building something.”

TIF Thoughts on what Marriott had to say about Cook…

Cook indicated that he wants to get back into management last month, with the 53-year-old declaring that he misses football but he also shared that he would ‘love to try’ and take a team from the Championship to the Premier League and with the Owls currently sitting second-from-bottom in the Championship, it certainly seems unlikely that he would have that opportunity with Wednesday this term.

However, during a press conference last week, Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri discussed his ambitions and he suggested (10:27) that if the Yorkshire club hadn’t been given a points deduction for the 2020/21 campaign, they would be aiming for promotion this season, so given that both Wednesday’s and Cook’s long-term ambitions are similar and seeing as though he does seem to be quite keen on getting back into management, perhaps it is possible that the Owls could bring Cook to the club.

So, it will be interesting to see if Sheffield Wednesday do target Cook and if so, then whether or not they manage to persuade him to come to Hillsborough.
