Mark Donnelly, Phil Smith and Nick Barnes discussed all things Sunderland on the most recent edition of The Roar podcast from The Sunderland Echo and one of the things that they talked about during the show is the possibility that the Black Cats will make a move for Leeds United midfielder Robbie Gotts before the domestic transfer window closes on 16th October.

Sunderland are said to have been interested in the 20-year-old Leeds United man of late, as have their League One rivals Hull City and Swindon Town, in addition to Championship side Huddersfield Town.

To kick off our quiz on this past weekend's EFL action, by how many goals did Championship leaders Bristol City beat Nottingham Forest on Saturday?

With just over a week left for Sunderland to potentially complete the signing of Gotts, here is what Smith had to say about the likelihood that this transfer will happen during the latest episode of The Roar podcast: “I think with Robbie Gotts, he’s obviously a player that Sunderland have asked about.

“I did wonder if maybe that was an interest that was sparked before Grant Leadbitter made such an excellent return to the team and before Dan Neil emerged as a very viable first-team option.

“Without those two players at the start of the summer, you’re probably thinking Sunderland are a central midfielder light. At this moment in time, I’m not convinced they necessarily need another central midfielder so that would be a surprise, although I guess we’ll wait and see.”

TIF Thoughts…

Judging by what Smith had to say, it seems as though he isn’t convinced that the North East club will sign Gotts before next Friday’’s deadline, with the journalist sharing that he believes the central midfield position is not a major area of concern for Phil Parkinson’s side at present.

If the Black Cats decision-makers share a similar opinion to Smith, then perhaps it would be a surprise for Sunderland to sign Gotts, especially as the player is said to have other suitors who could potentially see strengthening the central midfield position as being more of a priority than the Black Cats.
