Speaking on a recent episode of the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Rangers came very close to signing Sampdoria midfielder, Jakub Jankto, on transfer deadline day.

Since moving to Sampdoria from Udinese in the summer of 2018, in what was originally a year-long loan deal that the club made a £13.05 million permanent move last summer, Jankto has gone on to feature 61 times for Blucerchiati, chipping in with three goals and providing six assists along the way.

How well do you remember Rangers' 2020/21 season so far? We'll start you off with an easy one... Rangers beat Aberdeen 1-0 in the opening gameweek of the Premiership, but which player scored the only goal of the game?

Last season, the £8.55 million-rated 24-year-old made 30 Serie A appearances for Sampdoria, scoring two goals, providing four assists and averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.52 – ranking him as the club’s 18th-best performer in the league.

However, despite the fact that the Czech Republic international only joined the Italian side permanently in 2019, Romano recently revealed, on an episode of the Here We Go podcast, that Scottish Premiership side Rangers nearly signed the central midfielder on transfer deadline day.

He said: “The player was Jakub Jankto, from Sampdoria, [who] was really, really close to joining Rangers on deadline day.

“I don’t know if [this] was public or not. He was really close to joining Rangers. They didn’t find [an] agreement with Sampdoria, but, let’s see what will happen in January, because Bundesliga clubs are interested [in the player].

TIF Thoughts…

From Romano’s comments, it would certainly appear as if the journalist is of the belief that Rangers were very close to signing Jankto on transfer deadline day, however, that the club could not find an agreement with Sampdoria, and, thus, the move did not materialise.

However, if Rangers wish to go back in for the player in January, it would appear as if they will have competition for the 24-year-old’s signature, with Romano saying that there is interest in the midfielder from the Bundesliga.

As such, this will certainly be a potential deal that we will be keeping a very close eye on once as January transfer window draws closer.
