Journalist Michael Gannon has recently made a claim about Neil Lennon and how some fans have been waiting for Celtic to slip up under him.

Gannon was a guest on the latest episode of the Record Celtic podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. One topic of discussion was Lennon following Celtic’s recent poor run of form. Gannon believes that people have been waiting for Celtic to struggle under Lennon so that they can go after the club’s boss.

The Hoops have now failed to win in their three outings in all competitions. They were recently held to a 3-3 draw at Pittodrie by Aberdeen. Lennon recently said that there is ‘no justification’ to sack him at this point and he also feels that some Celtic fans need to ‘calm down’ (as per Sky Sports).

Gannon defended Lennon, stating that Celtic were in a poorer situation under Brendan Rodgers some seasons ago but no one was calling for his head at that point in time.

Do you think some fans want Neil Lennon to fail at Celtic?

No

He said: “They’re two points worse off than last season – actually, if you look at the season before, Celtic were far worse off in Brendan Rodgers’ last season. I think by this point, they had lost to Hearts, lost to Killie and drew with St. Mirren. So they dropped more points at that point two seasons ago and still won the league.

“It is really early. Rodgers got put out of Europe by AEK Athens as well. Nobody was calling for his head at that point in time. There were sections of the fans who didn’t fancy Neil coming back, saw him as a kind of cheap option and they’ve been waiting for the slip-ups to pounce on this and go after him a wee bit.”

TIF Thoughts on Gannon’s comments regarding Neil Lennon…

This is Lennon’s second stint as the Celtic manager, with his current stint starting in February 2019 when Rodgers left the club to join Leicester City.

Lennon helped the club win their ninth Premiership title last season and the Hoops also won the League Cup by beating Rangers in the final. He also won the Premiership title three times in his initial stint as the club’s manager.

He has clearly done quite a bit for the club over the last few years and because of that, the club’s supporters should back him this season.
