Celtic legend Chris Sutton has recently made a claim about Leigh Griffiths ahead of the club’s Old Firm derby clash.

Sutton was a guest on the latest episode of the Record Celtic podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. Sutton spoke about the club’s strikers and this led to him talking about Griffiths. He doesn’t believe that the striker is fit enough yet and because of that, he isn’t at the level of being able to start games for Celtic.

Griffiths made his first appearance of the campaign against St. Johnstone and he did score a goal as well. He had turned up for pre-season training in an overweight condition and he was then left behind in Glasgow when the squad flew to France for pre-season friendlies. He was also injured for the first few games of the campaign.

When talking about the Scottish striker, who is valued at £1.8m, Sutton said:

“Leigh Griffiths would have had another couple of weeks [of] training under his belt, which would’ve been really important but he’s been missing for months and months and months now. Condition-wise, he wouldn’t be at the level.”

TIF Thoughts…

Griffiths had impressed for the Bhoys in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign and he had found the back of the net seven times during that period and this included a hat-trick against St. Mirren. Even last season, he had missed some games in the first half of the campaign due to an injury but he became an important player for the Bhoys after that.

That might be a reflection of the fact that when fit, Griffiths can be a vital player in the goalscoring department for the Hoops. He has made 15 appearances in all competitions against Rangers for Celtic and Hibernian combined and has directly contributed to seven goals. So using him at some point in the upcoming Old Firm derby might prove to be effective for the Bhoys.
