Niall McCaughan, Tom Williams, Joe McGrath and Norman Riley all appeared on the most recent edition of the Football Social Daily podcast where they discussed all of the latest Premier League news and during the show, the panel talked about the European Premier League and the likelihood that Tottenham Hotspur would get picked for the competition.

Reports emerged about a potential FIFA-backed European Premier League earlier this month, with Sky Sports claiming that ‘as many as five English clubs’ could be part of this competition, the winners of which could be awarded ‘hundreds of millions of pounds’ each year.

How well can you remember the last few weeks of Spurs action? 1. Which played scored a hattrick against Maccabi Haifa?

The panel on this recent edition of the Football Social Daily podcast was optimistic about Spurs’ chances of being involved in this competition, should it become official, and they suggested that the Lilywhites may be added to the tournament over their north London rivals Arsenal.

McGrath said: “All Arsenal have really got is a really good stadium and even Tottenham have come out of nowhere and they’ve got a better stadium than them now. The high class of players in Tottenham’s team, I think, outclasses what Arsenal have got.

“I would pick Tottenham over Arsenal. If it’s for the manager, Jose Mourinho, if it’s for Harry Kane – one of the best strikers in the world – it’s for [Heung-min] Son as well, you look at his love from across Asia, you’ve got to think of these things like they would be thinking of these things – the people trying to create this Super League – it’s about how the team sells.”

McCaughan agreed with McGrath’s comments, saying: “I think you’ve got a very good point. Especially now that Jose Mourinho’s the manager of Tottenham and Harry Kane’s a top-class player and Gareth Bale’s back at the club and they’ve got an Amazon documentary and the best stadium in football on planet Earth, I think it’s a really, really interesting point.”

Williams then offered his view on whether or not Spurs would have a place in the European Premier League, saying: “In terms of what Joe said about what the powers that be and what the decision-makers are after, actually, Tottenham Hotspur is probably a better bet for them than Arsenal are at the moment.”

TIF Thoughts on what the panel had to say about Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of being in the European Premier League…

So, while a European Premier League is not confirmed, it’s clear that these podcasters think that if it were, you could make a case for Spurs to be included as one of Europe’s elite clubs.

Considering that it has been reported that up to five English sides could be included in this competition and knowing that Tottenham have finished in one of the Premier League’s top five places in 11 of the last 15 seasons, perhaps that consistency on the pitch should be acknowledged with the club being offered a place in the European Premier League.

However, as per The Athletic, Spurs are not ranked in England’s top five in terms of the size of their global fanbase or their record of winning major trophies, so perhaps you could also make an argument against the north London club being included in this competition.

So, if the competition does become official, it will be interesting to see what the relevant higher-ups base their decision on when choosing which clubs are to be involved, as we feel their method of making that choice will likely have a major impact on whether or not Spurs are offered a place.
