Some Tottenham Hotspur fans have been replying to a tweet that was recently posted by the club’s official Twitter account in which they referenced Sunday’s UEFA Nations League clash between the Republic of Ireland and Wales, which saw two Spurs players – Matt Doherty and Ben Davies – face off against one another.

Both of these Spurs players were on the pitch for the entirety of Sunday’s international match, which saw both of the Tottenham defenders help their team to keep a clean sheet as the game finished 0-0.

As per The Irish Times, Doherty – a natural right-back – spent the majority of this game playing at centre-back, which is a position that he has played on only a handful of occasions in his career according to Transfermarkt.

The Irish Times gave Doherty the joint-highest rating (6/10) of any Republic of Ireland player in this game and described his performance at the centre of defence as being ‘Maldini-esque.’

So, what did these Spurs fans think of the club’s post involving Matt Doherty and Ben Davies?

Some Tottenham fans praised Doherty’s performance at centre-back in this recent Nations League game.

How well can you remember the last few weeks of Spurs action? 1. Which played scored a hattrick against Maccabi Haifa?

It had been reported that Spurs were hoping to sign a new centre-back prior to last week’s international transfer deadline, however, they didn’t end up signing anyone in this position despite Jan Vertonghen departing the club permanently in the summer and Juan Foyth recently leaving the Lilywhites on loan for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign.

While Spurs do have until Friday to do business with EFL clubs and they have been linked with a move for Swansea City defender Joe Rodon, some Tottenham fans replied to this tweet to question if Doherty could be the Lilywhites’ new centre-back.

So, judging by these Spurs fans’ replies to this tweet, it certainly seems as though the 28-year-old Irishman’s performance at centre-back at the weekend made a positive impression on some Tottenham supporters and it will be interesting to see if Jose Mourinho does deploy him in this position in the future.
