Mark Douglas has been speaking on the latest edition of the Everything is Black and White podcast about all things relating to Newcastle United.

1 of 7

Who will the Toon play in the next round of the Carabao Cup after they beat Newport County on penalties?

One of the topics that he spent some time on was transfers, particularly players who could leave St James’ Park and one such player he mentioned was Christian Atsu.

While the 28-year-old did not end up leaving the Toon before the close of the international window on Monday, he could still leave in the domestic window which expires on October 16th, with Watford and Nottingham Forest thought to be interested in the winger.

It seems as if Douglas actually thinks that Atsu is a good player but just not at the level required for the Toon, and a move to join the Hornets would be good for the 28-year-old.

He said: “Atsu is probably the one that you would say [is] likely to go today [Monday].

“There’s some interest from Forest; there’s some interest from the Championship.

“He would be a great addition for a team in the Championship; he’s a good player in his own right – probably just not quite at the level that Newcastle need to be moving now.”

Andrew Musgrove then mentioned that Watford were talking with Newcastle about Atsu and The Chronicle reporter seems to think that would be a good move for the former Chelsea man.

“I think he deserves a move now; he’s not going to play at Newcastle this season, and Watford would be a fantastic move for him.”

Do you think it is time for Atsu to go?

Yes, he is not good enough

No, we should keep him in the squad

TIF Thoughts…

If you look at Atsu’s statistics while he has played in the Premier League for Newcastle, it is clear that he has not scored many goals or provided many assists, so it should be no surprise to see the Toon move him on.

However, while he was with Newcastle in the Championship, Atsu, who is valued at £4.32m by Transfermarkt, scored five goals and provided three assists in 32 games for the Toon.

So, you can see why Watford might want him, and should he decide to leave St. James’ Park for a move to Watford, he could prove to a be a decent addition for the Hornets.
