Liam Kennedy has been discussing the recent reports with regards to the fitness of Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle during a recent edition of NUFC Matters with Steve Wraith on his YouTube channel

The 29-year-old is out with a medial collateral injury and according to Transfermarkt, isn’t due to return until the end of October.

Who will the Toon play in the next round of the Carabao Cup after they beat Newport County on penalties?

The journalist shared his concern with regards to the length of time the player is still expected to be out of action for and suggested it could be longer when asked who he believes is the club’s second-choice striker behind Callum Wilson, speaking on the show, here is what he had to say:

“Dwight Gayle is a funny one, because I’ve actually seen reports and suggestions over the last few days he might not be fit until January – and that would be a big concern of mine. I was told initially it could be November, it looks like being a little bit further than that, if you believe what people are writing. That would be a concern.

“Beyond that, I think you have to change things, because Joelinton has already proven that he is not good enough to play as a No 9, as a striker.”

Who would you prefer to see lead the line in Callum Wilson's absence?

TIF Thoughts…

It’s clear from his comments that Kennedy isn’t convinced of Joelinton’s ability to lead the line. The Brazilian joined the Magpies for a reported £39.6m (as per Transfermarkt) but in 51 appearances for the club, he has managed an underwhelming total of just six goals.

Taking that into consideration, you can understand why he sees Gayle’s potential extended absence as a “concern”. Fortunately for Steve Bruce’s side, their new striker, Callum Wilson has been in fine form, netting four times in as many Premier League appearances this season, hopefully, he can remain fit and in top form.
