Many Newcastle United fans have slammed the performance of Ryan Fraser in the club’s penalty shootout triumph over Newport County in the fourth round of the League Cup.

The Magpies conceded in the fifth minute of the game before Jonjo Shelvey scored a late equaliser in the 87th minute of the game on Wednesday evening.

Newport defender Brandon Cooper missed his penalty in the shootout leading to Newcastle winning it 5-4, as Steve Bruce’s men progressed to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup (as per BBC Sport).

Who will the Toon play in the next round of the Carabao Cup after they beat Newport County on penalties?

The game saw Fraser start on the left-wing, but the Scotsman’s performance left many Toon fans frustrated, so, they took to Twitter and made their opinion very clear about Fraser.

Has Fraser been a poor signing for Newcastle?

Fraser, who is now valued at £15.75 million (as per Transfermarkt), had joined Newcastle earlier this summer and he arrived at the club on a free transfer.

He had refused to sign a short-term extension at Bournemouth earlier this year and his contract with the South Coast club expired.

For Newcastle, so far, Fraser has now made four appearances in all competitions and he scored for the club in their Carabao Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers (as per Transfermarkt).

Some other Toon fans were also unhappy with his performance on Wednesday.

Fraser, currently 26, failed to complete a single dribble in the whole game but he came up with the joint third-best tally for key passes (four) for the Magpies. He even took as many as three shots in the game (as per Whoscored).

Despite this, the Scot still only earned an uninspiring 6.67/10 match rating during the cup tie, which is perhaps why Toon fans were frustrated with the winger.
