Liverpool journalist Paul Wheelock has been sharing his thoughts on a potential move to Barcelona for Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

This comes after Wheelock recently made an appearance on the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast where he spoke about the latest news stories concerning the Merseyside club at the moment.

First up in this Steven Gerrard quiz, how old is the former Liverpool man?

After Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman recently revealed that he wanted to sign Wijnaldum in the recent summer transfer window, Wheelock had this to say on the matter.

He said: “I think it’s definitely one to keep an eye on [Wijnaldum to Barcelona]. In my mind, it may be a viable option for him because he’s had a great run at Liverpool, he’s been one of [Jurgen] Klopp’s most important players.

“I think he proved in the Arsenal game why he still is one of Klopp’s more important players but you know, players do move on and I think he’ll be around 30 years of age by then. It might be a good move for him to end his career with Barcelona, but he’s been a great servant to Liverpool, I’m sure for however long he remains at the club, whether it’s the next couple of months or the rest of the season, he’ll do a great job.”

Liverpool signed the 29-year-old back in the 2016 summer transfer window from Newcastle United for £24.75 million.

Since then, the 29-year-old, who is currently valued at £36 million, has made 192 appearances for the Reds in which he has managed to score 19 goals and provide 16 assists along the way.

Two of Wijnaldum’s most famous goals in a Liverpool shirt came against Barcelona in the Merseyside club’s 4-0 win over the Spanish club in the 2019 Champions League semi-final second leg at Anfield.

TIF Thoughts on Liverpool transfer claim concerning Georginio Wijnaldum…

It’s nice to hear Wheelock say just how important Wijnaldum has been for Liverpool since he arrived at Anfield.

With Wijnaldum’s current contract at Liverpool set to expire at the end of June next year, there’s every possibility that the Dutchman could make the move to Barcelona next summer if Koeman is still interested in signing him by then and he doesn’t sign a new deal at Liverpool.
