Liverpool journalist Matt Addison has shared some details on Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and his current situation at the Merseyside club.

This comes after Addison recently made an appearance on the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast where he went through all the latest news stories surrounding the club at the moment.

First up in this Steven Gerrard quiz, how old is the former Liverpool man?

After the Dutchman recently played down the transfer rumours previously linking him with a move to Barcelona, Addison had this to say on the matter.

He said: “[Wijnaldum has] 10 months, of course, left on his contract. ‘We’ll see’ was his response to whether he might sign a new deal at Liverpool. I don’t think he’d be absolutely averse to staying but at this stage, I think it’s probably an unlikely scenario now, there’s not really been any talks or any progression.

“It looks like he may well be on his way at the end of that 10-month period but obviously, at this stage, it would be unwise for him to rule out potentially staying because you just don’t know what can happen over the next few months.

“[It’ll] be interesting to see what happens. It’s all gone a bit quiet on that front. I think at the moment, I’m expecting him to leave and I don’t think that will be a massive shock, really, to anybody given with 10 months left on most players’ contracts, it’s very unlikely that a solution can be found from that position.”

Liverpool signed the midfielder back in the 2016 summer transfer window from fellow Premier League club Newcastle United in a deal worth a reported fee of £24.75 million.

Overall, the 29-year-old has made a total of 192 appearances for the Reds in which he has managed to score 19 goals and provide 16 assists along the way.

So far this season, Wijnaldum has had a fairly underwhelming start to Liverpool’s 2020/21 Premier League campaign with WhoScored giving him a season rating of 6.54/10 for his performances in the four league appearances he’s made.

TIF Thoughts…

Listening to what Addison had to say on the situation, it appears that there’s more chance of Wijnaldum leaving Liverpool at the end of the season rather than him signing a new deal at Anfield.

Hopefully, if this is his last season at the club, Wijnaldum can end on a high note and have a successful final season with the Reds before he potentially leaves.
