Many Celtic fans have been talking about the latest tweet that journalist Tom English recently relayed on social media.
English’s latest tweet talked about Shane Duffy. The journalist said that he wonders what the defender’s goal difference will be at the end of the season since he has now scored in his first two games for the Bhoys. He stated that after two games, Duffy’s goal difference is currently +1. That is because Celtic have conceded only once in his two games for the Bhoys and he has scored twice himself.
It follows comments from former Republic of Ireland defender Gary Breen, who noted his concern over Duffy’s international prospects upon his move to Parkhead as he criticised the standard of the Scottish top flight.
With English claiming he did not want to engage in ‘Breenism’, his comments have not been taken well by Hoops supporters.
This tweet from the journalist caught the attention of many Celtic fans, who aired their negative thoughts about what English had to say.
It’s a team game Tom. Are you aware of the concept.

Can Duffy score more than ten goals this season?
Yes
No
Only someone who knows literally nothing about football would talk in terms of a player’s individual goal difference

There isn’t a defender in world football who will play through a season and score more goals himself than his team concede overall, but don’t let that stop Tom from making the most blatantly petty of petty points here!
Ridiculous. https://t.co/LewyZ3p4NB

What an absolutely pointless tweet

Duffy joined Celtic on loan from Brighton earlier this summer and he started in Celtic’s games against St. Mirren and Ross County. He scored in both games, helping the club beat Ross County 5-0 last Saturday and playing a pivotal role in their 2-1 win over St. Mirren in midweek. He has been Celtic’s best performer in the 2020/21 Premiership season, according to WhoScored.
English’s tweet caught the attention of some other Celtic fans who didn’t have a positive opinion about what he had to say.
Without wanting to engage in UncleTomism, football is a team game, and not about individuals. I am sure Shane Duffy would be embarrassed at you singling him out.

Given the role of defenders generally I’d suspect many would have negative GD based on your interpretation ?

Many of these Celtic fans aren’t happy with English and his logic involving Duffy’s goalscoring record, and in fairness, it does seem to be a bizarre comment to make about a defender, especially after just two games.
The Irishman had scored five goals in the Premier League in the 2018/19 season for Brighton and had scored four times for Blackburn Rovers in the 2015/16 Championship campaign as well (as per WhoScored).
It shows that he can often be active in the goalscoring department and because of that, it may not be a surprise that he’s scored twice already. Celtic fans can only hope that his performances and goals help them to win their 10th Premiership title in a row this season.
