Rangers podcaster David Edgar reacted to the Gers’ 2-2 draw with Hibernian this past weekend in a video that was posted to the Heart and Hand YouTube channel and he spent some time talking about Steven Gerrard’s decision to start Jon McLaughlin over Allan McGregor in this post-match reaction video.

The Gers signed McLaughlin in the summer and this past weekend saw the 33-year-old earn his seventh straight Premiership start of the campaign.

Rangers fan? We bet you can't get 100% on this Gers transfer quiz. According to Transfermarkt, the £4.5million signing of which player has been the club's most expensive signing so far this summer?

McGregor started in the Gers’ opening day win over Aberdeen, but since then, he has not made a league appearance for the Glasgow-based club, with the 38-year-old battling against injury throughout the beginning of the 2020/21 season.

McGregor was on the bench for Sunday’s clash with Hibs after starting last Thursday’s Europa League second-round qualifier but McLaughlin was given the nod for Sunday’s game and here is what Edgar had to say about Gerrard’s decision to go with the former Sunderland man over McGregor versus Hibs: “Interesting team selection – Jon McLaughlin starting in goals ahead of Allan McGregor, I wonder if that is an insight into who currently is the number one.

“It’s a big game for Jon McLaughlin to get that shout ahead of him, so I wonder if he’s managed to get ahead of Allan McGregor in the ratings.”

Who should be Rangers' number one?

TIF Thoughts…

So, as can be seen in what Edgar had to say, clearly, he believes that McLaughlin starting ahead of McGregor at the weekend may be an indication that the 33-year-old has ousted the veteran McGregor as Rangers’ number one.

Despite McGregor only making one league appearance this term, Rangers have got the best defensive record in Scotland’s top tier in terms of goals conceded at present.

So, perhaps McLaughlin has impressed the boss with his performances this term and maybe Edgar is right in saying that the summer signing is now seen as Rangers’ number one, though only time will tell if McGregor simply needs more time to get fully match-fit before returning to the starting lineup.
