Pundit Paul John Dykes has recently been talking about former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers and he has criticised the current Leicester City boss.

Dykes was hosting the latest episode of the ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. Dykes talked about Rodgers and he believes that the former Celtic manager isn’t a great spotter of talent and a lot of players that he signed at Parkhead turned out to be flops.

Which player played the highest number of minutes in all competitions for Celtic in the 2019/20 season?

Rodgers left Celtic in February 2019 and joined Leicester City. He had joined Celtic in the summer of 2016 and Neil Lennon replaced him when the former Liverpool boss left.

Dykes aired some criticism about Rodgers and he believes that one can make a whole podcast about some of Rodgers’ failed signings at Parkhead.

He said: “You could do a whole podcast on bad signings of Brendan Rodgers’ time at Celtic. I don’t think he was a great spotter of talent, I think he was a great developer of players. A lot of the players that he brought in were flops. They didn’t play a lot of games.

Was Rodgers a good spotter of talent?

“We spent a lot of money on players like [Cristian] Gamboa, [Eboue] Kouassi, [Marvin] Compper, [Jack] Hendry – the list goes on. If you were to look at the successes over the duds or the flops – I don’t like calling anybody a flop, but they certainly didn’t do it for Celtic. There’s plenty on his CV.”

TIF Thoughts…

As per the Scottish Sun, Rodgers signed 27 players during his time at Celtic. The same report from the Scottish Sun suggests that 17 of the players that he signed at Parkhead left the club permanently or on loan before the 23rd of January 2020.

So perhaps, Dykes is right when he says that Rodgers isn’t great at spotting talent. On the flip side though, he did help the club win two Premiership titles in a row and under him, the club even won two Scottish Cup titles and three Scottish League Cups. So while he might not have been a great spotter of talent, he did help the club win a fair amount of trophies.
