Celtic legend Chris Sutton has recently been talking about John McGinn and he believes that the Hoops should have signed the current Aston Villa midfielder in 2018.

Sutton was a guest on the latest episode of the Record Celtic podcast and he talked about multiple issues surrounding the Bhoys. He also gave his opinion about the club’s potential transfers this summer and this led to him talking about the club’s chase of McGinn back in 2018. He feels that Celtic should have signed the midfielder back then.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

In the summer of 2018, Celtic had multiple bids rejected for McGinn when he was at Hibernian. Following this, the Scottish midfielder ended up joining Aston Villa.

Podcast host Craig Swan compared Celtic’s signing of David Turnbull to their chase of McGinn in 2018. This led to Sutton talking about the current Aston Villa midfielder.

The club legend said: “In my view, I think that McGinn had proven himself more and you may counter that argument and say, well, in your view, that he hadn’t, but I think McGinn was one which Celtic should have gotten over the line.”

TIF Thoughts…

In the Premier League in the 2019/20 campaign, McGinn made 28 appearances for Villa and picked up a good average rating of 7.00. He scored three goals and racked up as many assists (as per Whoscored).

As a result, he was Villa’s second-best player in the season – only behind Jack Grealish. This shows that McGinn is proving himself at a Premier League level already. Not just that, but McGinn happens to be a Celtic fan as well.

Going by his performances from last season, it is clear that the midfielder would have added a lot of quality to the Celtic midfield. So it is understandable why Sutton seems to regret the fact that Celtic didn’t sign the Scotsman in 2018.
