Pundit Paul John Dykes has recently made a claim about Celtic’s chase of Charlton Athletic youngster Alfie Doughty.

Dykes was hosting the latest episode of the A Celtic State of Mind podcast and he spoke about multiple issues involving the Bhoys. He shed some light on potential Celtic transfers and one player that he focused on was Doughty.

The pundit believes that Doughty seems on his way out of Charlton and he would be a backup option at Parkhead.

Which player played the highest number of minutes in all competitions for Celtic in the 2019/20 season?

The Hoops have had two bids rejected for the 20-year-old and the second bid stood in the region of around £650,000. Charlton are believed to be holding out for more cash and Doughty’s contract at the club runs out in the summer of 2021.

Dykes talked about Doughty’s situation at Charlton and said that since they have signed Akin Famewo on loan from Norwich City, Doughty might be leaving but he wouldn’t be a first-choice option at Parkhead.

He said: “I think we’ll see some loan deals for some of the younger players but I also believe that we still need to bring in a left-back.

“I’ve mentioned a couple of names already at the top of the show – Alfie Doughty from Charlton Athletic. As far as I know, the last bid that we made was £650k.

“There has been a Charlton takeover there and they’ve brought in from Norwich – Akin Famewo. That may look as though Doughty is on his way out.

“Will we pay £1 million to bring him in as backup? He would be a backup, wouldn’t he? He wouldn’t be a first-choice at the moment.”

TIF Thoughts…

It has been reported that Celtic are looking to sign a new left-back this summer and Doughty is someone who can play at left-back or in the left midfield position.

The Hoops have played in a flat back four and in a back three this season, so they might need players who can play at left-back or as a left midfielder.

Doughty can play in those positions and already has the experience of playing regular first-team football. He is still only 20 and may still improve in the future. So, trying to sign the Englishman could make sense for the Bhoys.
