Niall McCaughan has been discussing Wolverhampton Wanderers’ recent capture of Fabio Silva during a recent episode of the Football Social Daily podcast.

The Molineux-based club signed the ‘highly-rated’ 18-year-old in a deal worth £35m from Portuguese side FC Porto (as per Goal.com), despite him having featured on just 21 occasions for the first-team (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk).

To kick off this quiz on Wolves' 2019/20 season, which side did the Old Gold's first win of the Premier League term come against?

When discussing this particular bit of business, McCaughan said:

“If this 18-year-old kid turns out to be a world-beater, Wolverhampton Wanderers might sell him for double, you know, they might sell him for £70m, and therefore they’ve made a £37m profit in a time where making profits is almost non-existent, particularly with the lack of fans and matchday revenue coming in for these clubs – and that’ll be the case now for at least the first half of the season, in my opinion. So certainly, I don’t think investing in players is the worst idea in the world.”

TIF Thoughts…

Based on his comments, it is clear that McCaughan believes the Premier League club could make a substantial profit on the striker in years to come. Although in our view, the fee for somebody so inexperienced seems excessive, you have to assume Nuno Espirito Santo and the backroom staff at Wolves have seen something in him to suggest he could be a star of the future.

Do you think signing Fabio Silva was a smart piece of business?

In time, perhaps he will provide some competition or support for Raul Jimenez, a centre-forward whom Wolves also signed from a Portuguese club on a permanent basis back in July 2019 for a fee of £34.2m (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk).

Although the youngster still has a long way to go in terms of proving himself, we believe this signing is a huge statement of intent from the West Midlands club as they look to improve on their 7th placed finish in the Premier League last season.
