Football journalist David Ornstein has been talking about West Ham United’s transfer interest in Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matviyenko.
This comes after Ornstein recently co-hosted the latest episode of The Athletic’s Ornstein & Chapman Podcast where he talked through a variety of topics surrounding the London club at the moment.
On the subject of some potential transfer targets for the Hammers in the current transfer window, Ornstein had this to say on their interest in Matviyenko.
He said: “I was also told that the Ukraine central defender of Shakhtar Donetsk, Mykola Matviyenko, is somebody who interests them.
“I was told that he had a proposal of sorts from West Ham, but I don’t know how advanced it is and I don’t know whether it’s moved on since I was told it over the last couple of weeks.
“He’s a player who’s attracted interest in the past from Manchester City.”
The 24-year-old, who is currently valued at £8.1 million, made his senior debut for Shakhtar back in 2015 when he was 19-years-old.
Since then, the Ukrainian has made 81 appearances for the club in which he has managed to grab himself four goals and provide three assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).
Matviyenko earned himself a rating of 6.68/10 for his performances in the six appearances he made for Shakhtar during their Champions League campaign last season, showing that he can perform to a reasonable standard in a high-quality competition.
