On the latest episode of The Extra Inch podcast, Chris Miller, Nathan Clark and Bardi have been discussing the latest goings-on at Tottenham Hotspur.

One topic of discussion on the recent episode, which was titled ‘Psychedelic Spurs‘, was Portuguese midfielder, Gedson Fernandes. The 21-year-old joined the north London club on an 18-month loan from Benfica during the January transfer window but struggled to make much of an impression last season, making just seven substitute appearances in the Premier League, averaging a disappointing 6.12 rating (per Whoscored).

Which player scored Spurs' first goal of the Premier League campaign?

Miller certainly doesn’t seem to be a fan of the youngster, and he was quick to suggest that Spurs should not exercise their option to make his signing permanent during the podcast:

“If we activate that transfer fee for Gedson, I am going to find another club to support, because there’s no logic there at all. The agreed transfer fee is only there, I’m sure, to encourage a future sale for a high value to another club. So they can say, ‘look, we valued him at £50 million at one point.’ He’s not worth £50 million, he’s barely worth £5 million. He’s a young player who’s got some potential; we’ve got lots of those already. It’s odd. It’s very odd.”

TIF Thoughts…

Miller certainly doesn’t seem to rate Fernandes, although it is perhaps a little unfair to write him off, considering the lack of game time he got last season.

The loanee featured in a recent pre-season friendly against Reading playing as a right-back (per Football.London), so perhaps he could prove to be a back-up to Matt Doherty next season, should Serge Aurier leave the club in the near future.

Do you think Fernandes can make it at Spurs?

No

Considering the number of games Spurs may have to play next season, due to their involvement in the Europa League, perhaps we will see Fernandes get much more of a chance, and perhaps prove to Miller why he deserves a spot in Jose Mourinho’s squad.
