Daily Mirror reporter Simon Bird appeared on the latest edition of the Everything is Black and White podcast to discuss the latest goings-on at Newcastle United. The journalist spent some time talking about the Toon takeover situation and shared his thoughts on what is to come next with regard to the long-running saga.

A consortium consisting of the PCP Capital Partners firm, the Reuben brothers and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has been trying to take over the Toon in recent months, however, earlier this week, Newcastle United released a statement via their club website declaring that this takeover bid has been rejected by the Premier League – a claim which has been disputed.

To get things started a rather easy one. Who scored Newcastle's first league goal of the season?

During this recent edition of the Everything is Black and White podcast, Bird shared his thoughts on the future of this proposed Saudi-backed takeover bid and claimed that things are ‘going to get political’.

The journalist said: “My suspicion is that there are very wealthy Conservatives behind this bid, Conservative donors, and this is going to get political.

“There’s reports today that there’s been shuttle diplomacy in Whitehall, that’s got donations from Tory Party wheels, I would’ve thought, so if the government are starting to get involved, maybe there’ll be arm-twisting at a government level, but we don’t know where it’s going to [go].”

Is there any chance that this Saudi-backed takeover could still be approved?

YES, THERE'S A CHANCE

TIF Thoughts…

So, as can be seen in what the journalist had to say, it appears as though he believes that we haven’t heard the last of this Saudi-backed Toon takeover bid, despite Newcastle United releasing a statement claiming that the Premier League has rejected it.

Considering that the Premier League’s Owners’ and Directors’ test was first said to be the only aspect of this takeover that was left to be completed back in April, it’s clear that receiving approval has been a huge stumbling block for this takeover, however, if we really haven’t heard the last of the bid, then it will be interesting to see if Bird is right in saying that ‘this is going to get political’ and whether or not that will have any impact on helping the takeover bid to receive approval from the Premier League.
