Many Newcastle United supporters have been reacting to a tweet that was recently posted by the club’s official Twitter account which reveals that Stuart Attwell is set to take charge of the Toon’s opening game of the 2020/21 Premier League season against West Ham United on Saturday.

This tweet from the club’s official Twitter account includes a link to an article from Newcastle United’s official website which explains that Attwell was the referee for this same Premier League fixture last season, which the Toon managed to win 3-2. Three yellow cards were handed out during that game, one of which went to a Toon player.

This article on Newcastle’s official website also states that Attwell’s assistants for Saturday’s game will be Constantine Hatzidakis and Neil Davies, while Darren England will serve as the fourth official for this contest. Peter Bankes is set to be ‘on VAR duty’ for the Toon’s Premier League season opener and Simon Long will be his assistant.

Plenty of Newcastle United supporters have been sharing their thoughts on Attwell’s appointment as the referee of this game in response to the club’s tweet sharing this news.

Many Toon fans shared some concern in response to this tweet, with some suggesting that the Premier League have it out for Newcastle United.

To get things started a rather easy one. Who scored Newcastle's first league goal of the season?

However, other Newcastle fans didn’t appear to be too bothered about this news and they replied to this post to ask the club to provide an update on some other issues.

Are you concerned about this refereeing appointment?

NO

While some Toon fans appear to be anxious about this appointment, we feel that it is unfair to question Attwell’s integrity and given that he refereed three Newcastle games in the league last season and the Toon won two of them, perhaps Newcastle fans don’t need to be overly concerned about his presence as the official of this game.
