Liverpool journalist Matt Addison has been discussing a potential cash injection for the Reds with former Liverpool player Luis Alberto linked with a move to Leeds United.

This comes after Addison recently made an appearance on the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast where he spoke about the latest news stories surrounding the Merseyside club at the moment.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

After it was recently reported that Liverpool could get a cash boost from a potential sale of Alberto due to a 30% sell-on clause in his contract that was negotiated when he left Anfield back in 2016, Addison shared some insight on the matter.

He said: “Liverpool obviously made a little bit of a loss on that transfer fee, but crucially, they did have a 30% sell-on fee inserted as a clause into that contract, so whatever move he makes next, Liverpool will make 30% on him.

“Given how impressive he’s been for Lazio, you’d imagine, one of the best in Serie A in his position, the fact that Leeds United are linked, you’d imagine probably one or two other clubs are quite keen too, so if they do come in – and his release clause is £87 million; I don’t think there’s any chance of anyone paying that – the suggestion is that the Lazio might want £67 million.

Again, don’t think there’s a massive chance of anybody paying that, but if Leeds or any other team could potentially persuade Lazio to let him leave for a more reasonable fee, shall we say, a lesser fee than that, potentially Liverpool could stand to gain, so 30% of whatever Lazio accept, Liverpool will take.”

Liverpool signed Alberto back in the 2013 summer transfer window from Spanish club Sevilla for a fee of £7.2 million.

After making just 12 appearances for the Reds in which he only managed to grab himself one assist and failed to score a goal, Liverpool sold the Spaniard to Lazio for a fee of £3.6 million in 2016.

Since he arrived at Lazio, Alberto has made a total of 135 appearances for the Italian side, scoring 26 goals and providing 44 assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts…

Even though Liverpool took a financial loss on Alberto when they sold him back in 2016 as Addison mentioned, it would be nice for the club to get some money back from him if he were to make a move away from Lazio this summer.

Presumably, Liverpool would be hoping that Alberto leaves the club for a big transfer fee so they can make the most out of their 30% sell-on clause.
