Liverpool journalist Matt Addison has been sharing his thoughts on the possibility of the Merseyside club making a move for Barcelona attacker Antoine Griezmann this summer.

This comes after Addison recently made an appearance on the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast where he spoke about the latest news topics surrounding the club at the moment.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

It was recently reported that Griezmann could be on his way out of the Catalan club this summer, as Messi’s transfer U-turn has left the 29-year-old, whom Ronald Koeman had assured would be the Argentine’s replacement, in the lurch somewhat. This has put a number of Premier League clubs on alert if Griezmann were to be put up for sale during the current transfer window.

During the podcast, Addison shared his thoughts on the possibility of Liverpool being one of the clubs interested in signing the Frenchman this summer.

He said: “He’s been linked with Liverpool before, but of course, Griezmann was signed for £107 million, scored nine goals last season, so not a huge return for him, but he is obviously an exceptional player.

“Manchester United and Arsenal [are] apparently both linked with him as well. Look, even if you take the huge fee, the massive wages out of the equation, his best is as a kind of Firmino-type number nine and at the age of 29, similar to Roberto Firmino, I can’t see this happening at all.

“I think that the fee alone that it would take would just be far too big and as much as Griezmann is an excellent player, if Liverpool were going to go out and spend a huge amount of money on a forward player, it would probably be someone considerably younger and probably considerably cheaper as well, so, unfortunately, I am going to kill the dream on this one.”

According to Transfermarkt, Griezmann signed to Barcelona for a fee of £108 million back in the 2019 summer transfer window from fellow La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

Since then, the 29-year-old, who is currently valued at £86.4 million, has made 48 appearances for Barcelona in which he has managed to score 15 goals and provide four assists along the way across all competitions.

TIF Thoughts…

It appears that a potential move for Griezmann from Liverpool this summer would be unlikely due to the presumably hefty financial aspects to it as Addison mentioned in the podcast.

With Liverpool having missed out on a deal Timo Werner under similar circumstances earlier this year, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Liverpool not even bother trying to sign Griezmann this summer.
