Liverpool journalist James Pearce has been talking about the Merseyside club’s current centre-back options and whether or not they will be looking to sign a new one before the summer transfer window closes

This comes after Pearce recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Liverpool-themed podcast The Red Agenda where he discussed a number of subjects concerning the Merseyside club.

First up in this Jordan Henderson quiz, how old is the Liverpool captain?

On the possibility of the Reds signing a new centre-half before the transfer window shuts in October, Pearce had this to say on the matter.

He said: “That’s the club stance as we understand it currently, that there won’t be another centre-half coming in, because Klopp feels that with his wealth of midfield options now, he can use Fabinho as a fourth-choice centre-back and he’s also got huge hopes for Billy Koumetio the young French teenager who he effectively regards as fifth-choice.”

So far in this current summer transfer window, the Reds have spent £78.93 million on players such as Kostas Tsimikas, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota (per Transfermarkt).

Earlier in the window, Liverpool sold Croatian centre-back Dejan Lovren to Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg for a fee of £10.9 million on a three-year deal.

Liverpool’s previous Premier League game saw Fabinho play in the centre-half position alongside Virgil van Dijk against Chelsea after Joel Matip and Joe Gomez were both unavailable to play in the match at Stamford Bridge.

TIF Thoughts…

With Fabinho putting in an impressive display against Chelsea at the weekend playing as a centre-back, this shows that he is capable of playing in that position at a high standard despite predominantly playing as a defensive midfielder.

However, it would be safe to assume that Klopp would ideally want Gomez and Matip to be fit enough to be selected for future games.

From what Pearce had to say in the podcast, it would appear that Liverpool fans shouldn’t expect the club to sign a new centre-back in the coming weeks.
