The Liverpool Echo’s head of sport David Prentice has recently discussed Leighton Baines’ appointment as part of Everton’s coaching staff.

Approaching the end of the 2019/20 season, the Toffees initially offered the 35-year-old Englishman a one-year extension to his contract with the club (per BBC).

However, later in the summer, it was revealed that the veteran defender was set to retire from playing after 13 years at Goodison Park.

Following his retirement in late July, it was revealed last week that the former left-back had re-joined Everton as part of the coaching staff in the role of professional development coach.

So, in a recent episode of the Liverpool Echo’s Royal Blue: The Everton FC Podcast, Prentice discussed the appointment of Baines.

To kick off this quiz on Everton transfers, which player was the Toffees' club-record transfer fee paid on according to Transfermarkt?

He said: “I’m delighted but also a little surprised. I thought Bainesy was looking to make a clean break entirely and go and focus on things outside of football.

“When they talked about a new role, I anticipated some kind of, not ambassadorial, but some kind of creative role but to actually be on the training pitch, training young players, I think is a magnificent shout.

“We’ve spoken many times on the pod about the qualities that he has in the dressing room – what an inspirational character he is and how so many footballers look up to him.

“And if he can pass on a little bit of that experience, a little bit of that enthusiasm, a little bit of that know-how, to the younger players, it’s a win-win.

“So, it’s great for the football club and it’s great for him.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what the journalist had to say, he clearly believes that the appointment of Baines is a good one for the Toffees.

Certainly, with 420 appearances for Everton under his belt (per Transfermarkt), the former left-back has plenty of experience at Goodison Park.

So, in the role which will see him help young players in the first team, under-23s and under-18s, Baines could provide vital insight for up-and-coming players.
