Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Iago Herrerin is hoping to move before the transfer window closes and Crystal Palace could be his next destination, according to Spanish newspaper AS

Palace Xtra shared an image of an article that was included in the print version of the publication claiming that the player’s future ‘points to the Premier League’, with a report on the publication’s website suggesting that Herrerin is looking for a move where he can be a number-one goalkeeper amid interest from the Premier League, as well as in Turkey and Greece.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper is Bilbao-born and has previously had loan spells with Numancia and Leganes (as per Transfermarkt). He’s made 119 appearances for the Basque club to date, over which he has kept 43 clean sheets.

TIF Thoughts…

Last season, Herrerin was limited to just five appearances in the Spanish top-flight and according to WhoScored, his average performance rating was a slightly disappointing 6.22/10. During the 2019/20 campaign, he played much more regularly, making 31 league appearances and his performance rating that season was 6.46/10 – a better indication of what he’s capable of over a sustained period of time in our view.

Taking into consideration the Eagles already have Vicente Guaita who has started the new season in fine form, averaging a rating of 7.44/10 (via WhoScored.com) we can assume that if the club were to sign the Bilbao man it would be with a view to him providing backup to his fellow Spaniard – though that may contradict the report from AS somewhat.

The article does not detail any potential transfer fee but according to Transfermarkt, the player is currently valued at £2.52m. It is also worth noting that his contract with the La Liga club is due to expire at the end of this season and so it could be argued his club may be looking to cash in on him sooner rather than later, potentially opening the door for Crystal Palace to land their man.
