Aston Villa journalist Gregg Evans has been sharing his thoughts on how the Birmingham club have conducted their business throughout the current summer transfer window and what they may look to do before the window shuts

This comes after Evans recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Villa-themed podcast 1874 where he spoke about a number of topics concerning Dean Smith’s side.

First up in this Tyrone Mings quiz, how old is the Villa defender?

On the subject of the current transfer window, Evans had this to say on the matter.

He said: “I think what we’ve got to remember is that Villa have already spent a lot of money, they spent a lot of money last season, they can’t just keep shelling out money. Obviously, the owners have that kind of money, but they need to be careful and considered in their planning, so it’s not all about just splashing the cash. It’s just about trying to find a couple of astute signings, now.

“I still think there might be room for one really impressive signing still to come in – whether that’s a midfielder or a striker, we’ll see – but I think if they could pick up a loan somewhere for the season or pick up a bargain buy elsewhere, or maybe somebody who’s just a little bit older and has done it in his career and he’s just signed with no real sell-on value.

“Somebody like [Joao] Moutinho at Wolves, they got him for £5 million – just someone on that sort of level who has been there, done it and can just add a bit of experience. I think that will really help the squad.”

So far in this window, Villa have spent a total of £74.12 million, bringing in players such as Matty Cash, Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez and Bertrand Traore (per Transfermarkt).

Do you think Villa will sign anymore players before the window closes?

Villa kicked off their 2020/21 Premier League season with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Villa Park on Monday thanks to a goal from Ezri Konsa. Early on in the match, Blades defender John Egan was given a red card for bringing down summer signing Watkins to deny him a goalscoring opportunity. Fellow summer signing Martinez got his Villa career off to a good start by keeping a clean sheet and saving a penalty to deny the visitors a goal.

TIF Thoughts…

Despite Villa already spending a hefty amount of money on their incoming transfers in the current window, it’s intriguing to hear Evans suggest that Villa could have room to bring in one more big signing before the window closes in October.

It will be interesting to see if Villa continue their spending spree or if they decide to stick with what they have for the rest of the season.
