James McNicholas of The Athletic has been discussing Atletico Madrid’s reported interest in the Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira during a recent episode of the Arsecast Extra.

The journalist joined host Andrew Mangan and the 24-year-old Uruguayan’s future was one of a number of Gunners-related topics the pair discussed. Reports recently emerged from Spain that Diego Simeone’s side are working on bringing the player to Madrid, prompting the discussion.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

Torreira signed for Arsenal from Sampdoria in July 2018 for around £26m (as per Sky Sports) but has found himself out of favour in north London having yet to feature this season after starting just twice since returning from injury in July. Here is what McNicholas had to say with regards to the ongoing discussions between the two clubs:

“At the moment, the discussions with Atletico [Madrid] are about a loan deal. We don’t know yet if that could be a loan with an obligation or with an option [to buy]. People were unhappy about that when I tweeted it last night, because they want to see us get in money that we can use immediately. It may be that if we’ve offered some sort of guarantee or possibility of money down the line, that may free up Arsenal to spend some more money in the short term. I don’t know how the club’s finances will be structured, but that’s not impossible.”

Will you be sad to see Lucas Torreira leave?

TIF Thoughts…

According to Transfermarkt, the player is valued at £27m, and therefore you can understand why some supporters may see him as a player they can raise funds from in order to help secure some of their primary targets. However, according to McNicholas, a loan deal with some sort of clause inserted could still be enough to aid the Gunners in making further additions this summer.
