Charles Watts, the Arsenal correspondent for Goal, has been discussing the future of Matteo Guendouzi during a recent video on his YouTube channel

The Gunners midfielder hasn’t featured for Mikel Arteta’s side since the defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion back in June 2020, a game in which he was involved in an unsavoury incident with Neal Maupay.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

Following that, reports emerged claiming the club were experiencing ‘problems with the player’s attitude and general conduct.’ With the club seemingly looking to move the Frenchman on this summer, Watts made reference to some rumours on social media that the player has handed in a formal transfer request and dismissed them.

Here is what he had to say:

“Arsenal are still very much trying to get him out. Rumours started [on Tuesday] on Twitter that he had handed in an official transfer request – now, my understanding is that is absolutely not true, it is nothing but Twitter rumours. The initial rumours were actually attributed to L’Equipe, obviously a very famous French publication, but when you did a little bit of investigating, there was no genuine source there. There was nothing on the L’Equipe website, there was nothing on L’Equipe’s social media channels.

“It all just seemed to start from a few Twitter rumours from a few accounts that had L’Equipe’s name mentioned in there. The people I’ve spoken to at Arsenal say it is absolutely not the case, there has been no official transfer request.”

TIF Thoughts…

Guendouzi’s average performance rating in the Premier League last season was an average 6.69/10 (as per WhoScored) but despite that, up until now, the North London club have been unable to move the player on.

With the Gunners set to face Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, it will be interesting to see whether the midfielder will be called back into the squad.
